What is a reasonable price for best budget fitness tracker in 2017?
When I read magazine articles about best fitness trackers, the usual price is somewhere between $80-$100. $80 often assumed as a budget price.
I paid $23 (check actual price here) for mine one and a half years ago, and I still believe it is the best one. I use it daily 24/7 from the very first time and I it works great.
The name of the hero is Mi Band (first generation). It the best budget fitness tracker 2017.
But let me describe why I do thing Mi Band is the best fitness tracker a bit more detailed.
Why Mi Band 1 Is Still the Best Fitness Tracker (even in 2017)?
Different people have different requirements for fitness trackers. My 7 (a good number) are listed below
- It must count steps
- It must have silent alarm (smart alarm is a plus)
- It can be used 24/7
- It must not be a one more pet I have feed often
- it must monitor sleep activity
- It must synchronize with Google Fit (Apple Healthkit)
- Notifications… well, a nice to have bonus
Looks reasonable for you? Great! Let’s check point by point.
Mi Band does count steps. Accuracy? I would say it is reasonable. Actually, it is nearly impossible to calculate step really accurate having information from your wrist only. This is a physical limitation. Meanwhile, numbers look reasonable.
Actually, I mostly interested in trends and relative numbers than absolute values.
Am I active enough during a weekend?
Am I really that active during vacation as I feel?
These are the questions I’m interested in. Mi Band answers them.
A silent alarm is a must have feature for me. Wake me up without disturb my family. Moreover, what device worked as an alarm clock and was parked near with my bad? Right – my smartphone. And this is not the best setup. Now my smartphone is far away from my bed. For 1.5 year already
For some reason, Mi has removed smart alarm from Mi Fit application, but you still can use it with $3 additional app called “Tools & Mi Band” (which brings many other interesting features).
I wear it 24/7 and take it off only when go swimming for 1.5 years. Do not know what to add. Check mark
Mi Band really works from one charge about 30 days (25-35 days in my case). I did not hear about any other tracker which can do something near to this! I charge before a vacation and keep a charger at home.
Unfortunately, never Mi Band version with display and hard rate monitor have worse battery life.
Anyway, check mark. And for my Mi Band 1 – double check mark.
Mi Band tracks my sleeping. It automatically detects when I fall asleep and wake up. I was shocked to read that some trackers require a manual action for this. But be aware – Mi Band detects “night” time sleeping only. If you work nights and sleep day time – it could be an issue.
Anyway, check mark.
Synchronization with Google Fit
Why is this important? Well, google is big and good fitness hub is a must for it. So, I believe google will support and improve Google Fit in long term. Fit also has export functionality. I see google fit as the safest place for storing my data in for a long time. Same is true for Apple HealthKit.
Mi Band has uses Mi Fit application on your smartphone. Mi Fit can synchronize steps, weight, and sleep data to google fit.
Notifications… A Nice Bonus
If your band vibrates on incoming calls, SMSs, WhatsApp or whatever notification important for you, you can permanently set your phone to a silent mode and keep it in a pocket whole day (what saves phone battery – double profit).
This is nice, but I have a strong feeling that for this purpose it makes much more sense to use a smart watch. Fitness trackers have a very limited user interface for this.
But I do use this functionality as well.
Still not sure that mi band is the best fitness tracker so far?
Just try to find another one which beat Mi Band in these categories. Even for a bigger price.
Does Fitness Tracker (Even the Best One) Make You More Healthy?
Short answer: no.
It is not enough to know how many steps you do, if you want some results you have to change how you behave!
There are researches published which say that wearing a tracker itself makes people feeling they act more sportive and they do not act (for instance “Will a fitness tracker really help you lose weight?” and “Weight Loss On Your Wrist? Fitness Trackers May Not Help“)
If you really want to do some progress do something for this. Something more than just buy a fitness tracker.
