If you a regular reader of this site, you are probably wondering what does “Steuererklärung” mean. Very good question! “Steuererklärung” means “tax declaration” in German.
This means, that this article is for people who, like me:
- Reports taxes in Germany
- Uses Linux
My laptop runs Linux. Ubuntu 16.04 to be more exact. There is a Windows computer at home as well, but I prefer to solve all my task using one running Linux. Steuererklärung – is one of such tasks.
Actually, I already filled Steuererklärung last year mostly using Ubuntu and “SteuerSparErklärung” software last year. Therefore, this time I felt me safe buying new version of SteuerSparErklärung by Amazon. But let’s go step by step.
SteuerSparErklärung, and Where to Buy It
SteuerSparErklärung is one of the best software to prepare German tax declaration. At least some rating I checked said this. It has absolutely strange user interface which has nothing to do with usual Windows look and feel, but this is very usual for all such software. Probably, there is a reason for this, but I’m not aware.
But, purchasing by Amazon you buy the software and nothing more. If you have an Amazon credit card or present certificates – you can utilize them.
Purchasing from official site you get some extra “bonuses” like subscription like automatic purchasing next version in November. I do not like subscriptions, therefore purchasing from Amazon is my way to go. If you share my vision – you can buy SteuerSparErklärung 2017 on Amazon directly as well.
Installation SteuerSparErklärung on Linux
Last year I installed SteuerSparErklärung to my Ubuntu without any issues. Therefore I was surprized, that this time installation failed.
Installation – first step where I had to use Windows. This is a step backward and this is disappointing.
SteuerSparErklärung supports portable installation (it says it should be USB stick), but can be installed to hard drive as well.
- copied download setup to Windows machine
- started installation
- selected portable installation
- Copied all installed files back to my Ubuntu machine
- Started it with wine
Not that easy – looks like, that portable installation expects folder “Steuertipps” is located in the root of the drive. In wine environment, it expected it in Z:\Steuertipps. Drive Z is a root of your Linux file system in wine. Therefore I had to move folder “Steuertipps” to the root. Afterwards StartCenter.exe start working.
Preparing Steuererklärung Using SteuerSparErklärung in Ubuntu
I met no issues preparing tax declaration using my Linux laptop this year. Earlier I remember that some menu items targeted PDF files, which SteuerSparErklärung tried to open using Acrobat Reader and I got an error that “c:\program files\acrobat reader” is not found. This time I did not use these options.
So, for me everything was OK.
Printing Steuererklärung using Ubuntu
When all data is entered, I need to print Steuererklärung for Finanzamt (German Tax regulator). This is another painful area. PDF is generated, but it is incorrect – all graphic elements missing.
Therefore to prepare a PDF I had to use a portable version of SteuerSparErklärung on a Windows machine.
Some important steps do not work in Linux (Ubuntu). I had to use Windows to process things end to end.
Moreover, it becomes a bit worse than it was.
